Smile Design by Toronto Cosmetic Dentistry

Toronto Smile DesignDr. Stephen Phelan does not believe in a cookbook approach to smile design. He believes the best approach is to get to know the patient and their vision, desires and expectations and custom design a smile and treatment plan that is individual to them and only them. Dr. Phelan has broken the process down into a 6 -step system that is used as a guideline to getting the information necessary in order to develop an individualized treatment plan.

1. Initial Consultation
2. Smile Analysis
3. Functional Analysis
4. Final Consultation
5. Diagnostic Wax-Up (with optional diagnostic services)
6. Prototype or Temporary Restorations

1. Initial Consultation The initial consultation is the starting point in the process where your desires and goals of your vision for your new smile are discussed. Dr. Phelan believes that, as with creating a great sculpture, you should begin with the end in mind.

2. Smile Analysis The smile analysis is the artistic portion of the design process. We will take a detailed study of 35mm quality digital photographs of your teeth and smile. Dr. Phelan will then analyze your digital photos and existing smile to develop a list of recommendations based on your desires and goals.

3. Functional Analysis The Functional Analysis represents the scientific portion of the design process. This involves taking impressions of your teeth and bite for Dr. Phelan to analyze how your teeth and jaws fit and work together and their relationship to your jaw joint. It is very important for your bite to fit and function well with your new smile.

4. Final Consultation The final consultation is where everything really starts to come together. Dr. Phelan will have the digital images of your teeth and smile, as well as the models of your bite, in order for the two of you to develop your personalized treatment plan and smile design.

5. Diagnostic Wax-Up The diagnostic wax-up is the three dimensional recreation of your new smile. The models of your teeth are changed using special dental wax to create your dream smile. Dr. Phelan has created a highly detailed form that communicates with the dental ceramist all of the details that were discussed at the final consultation. The ceramist then creates the wax-up.

6. Temporary Restorations The Prototype or temporary restorations are an area that Dr. Phelan takes considerable pride and enjoyment in. Dr. Phelan did a presentation for hundreds of members of the prestigious Toronto Crown and Bridge Study Club in March, 2002, that detailed his techniques for creating excellent temporary veneers. Dr Phelan uses the diagnostic wax-up as a guide for the creation of very realistic temporary restorations. These serve as the prototype for the final restorations and a great chance to evaluate the smile design live and in person. Dr. Phelan will often schedule an appointment after a few days of use to evaluate the temporaries. This appointment is used to finalize the smile design and any changes that are desired.
